The project presents the design process of MOBO, developed by a team of industrial design students at Aalborg University, in the spring of 2025. MOBO was designed to support special needs pupils in 4th to 6th grade to thrive better in educational settings, with a focus to promote inclusion in the Danish public schools. The term ‘special needs pupils’ refers to pupils diagnosed with conditions such as ADHD, autism and anxiety.
The goal was to design a school desk that reduces sensory overload from visual- and verbal disturbance, and support pupils affected by under stimulation during class hours, while also offering a safe space for the pupil. Most importantly, it should provide appropriate accommodation that allows pupils with special needs to thrive alongside their fellow classmates without feeling excluded.
This led to the creation of MOBO, the modular school desk. Its raised table top edge fosters a sense of ownership and personal space, while allowing for quick attachment of desk screens, that reduce noise and visual distractions. These screens can be attached in different directions and levels to accommodate the diverse needs of pupils for shielding and thereby offer a “personalized” safe space to retreat to, when affected by sensory overload. A dedicated storage solution for the screens is placed directly on the desk, so that pupils sensitive to sensory overload do not have to leave their seat to use them. This also encourages more frequent use, as the screens are immediately accessible. Additionally, an optional fidget swing underneath the table top can help pupils release excess energy and thereby improve concentration and reduce restlessness. MOBO caters to both special-and non-special needs pupils, promoting better inclusion and well-being in the Danish public school.

Dette projekt præsenterer designprocessen af MOBO, udviklet af industrielt design-studerende ved Aalborg Universitet i foråret 2025. MOBO blev designet med formålet om at støtte inklusionsbørn i 4. til 6. klasse til at trives bedre i undervisningsmiljøer, med fokus på at fremme inklusion i den danske folkeskole. Begrebet ‘inklusionsbørn’ refererer til elever med diagnoser som ADHD, autisme og angst.
Målet var at designe et skolebord, der reducerer sanseoverbelastning fra visuelle og verbale forstyrrelser, og støtter elever, der er påvirket af understimulering i skoletiden, samtidig med at det tilbyder et trygt rum for den enkelte elev. Vigtigst af alt, skulle bordet give passende støtte, så elever med særlige behov kan trives sammen med deres klassekammerater uden at føle sig ekskluderet.
Dette førte til udviklingen af MOBO, det modulært skolebord. Den forhøjede kant på bordpladen skaber en følelse af ejerskab og personlig plads, samtidig med at den muliggør hurtig montering af bordskærme, der reducerer støj og visuelle forstyrrelser. Disse skærme kan monteres i forskellige retninger og højder for at imødekomme elevers individuelle behov for afskærmning og dermed tilbyde et personligt fristed, når de oplever sanseoverbelastning. En dedikeret opbevaringsløsning til skærmene er placeret direkte på bordet, så elever, der er følsomme over for sanseindtryk, ikke behøver at rejse sig for at bruge dem. Dette fremmer også hyppigere brug, da skærmene er let tilgængelige. Derudover kan en valgfri gynge under bordpladen hjælpe elever med at slippe overskudsenergi, hvilket kan forbedre koncentration og mindske uro. MOBO henvender sig både til elever med og uden særlige behov og fremmer dermed bedre inklusion og trivsel i den danske folkeskole.
