How can we bring life back to Danish villages and make them attractive to both residents and visitors? This question is the focal point of this Master's project in Urban Design from Aalborg University, using Tversted – a coastal village in Northern Jutland – as a case study.  

The project is based on the increasing depopulation of villages due to urbanisation. Through thorough mapping and analysis of Tversted, both the village’s strengths, qualities, and challenges are identified. Tversted has a strong local identity, beautiful nature, and many tourists – but lacks common meeting places and clear connections within the town’s structure. 

The design proposal revitalises the village through a new activity zone and a strategic wayfinding system. The activity zone is centrally located and creates a unifying meeting place with space for play, learning, relaxation, and nature interpretation. The wayfinding system connects the town’s functions and guides both locals and tourists through the village using colours, signage, and street furniture.  

The design is based on site-specific qualities and creates a framework for social life year-round. It supports both spontaneous encounters and planned activities, helping to make Tversted more than just a summer destination – but a vibrant village community.  

The project demonstrates how a village, with the right interventions, can strengthen its identity, attract new residents, and become an active part of regional development. "Revitalising Village Life" is both a concrete proposal and a method for rethinking the role of the village in the Denmark of the future.

Hvordan kan vi skabe liv i de danske landsbyer og gøre dem attraktive for både beboere og besøgende? Det spørgsmål er omdrejningspunktet for dette kandidatprojekt i Urban Design fra Aalborg Universitet, hvor Tversted – en kystlandsby i Nordjylland – er brugt som case. 

Projektet tager udgangspunkt i den stigende affolkning af landsbyer som følge af urbanisering. Gennem en grundig kortlægning og analyse af Tversted identificeres både stedets kvaliteter og udfordringer. Tversted har en stærk lokal identitet, smuk natur og mange turister – men mangler fælles mødesteder og tydelige forbindelser i byens struktur. 

Designforslaget revitaliserer byen gennem en ny aktivitetszone og et strategisk wayfinding-system. Aktivitetszonen placeres centralt og skaber et samlende mødested med plads til leg, læring, afslapning og naturformidling. Wayfinding-systemet forbinder byens funktioner og guider både lokale og turister gennem byen med farver, skilte og møblering. 

Designet er baseret på stedsspecifikke kvaliteter og skaber rammer for socialt liv året rundt. Det understøtter både spontane møder og planlagte aktiviteter og bidrager til at gøre Tversted til mere end blot en sommerdestination – nemlig et levende landsbysamfund. 

Projektet viser, hvordan en landsby med de rette greb kan styrke sin identitet, tiltrække nye beboere og blive en aktiv del af den regionale udvikling. "Revitalising Village Life" er både et konkret forslag og en metode til, hvordan vi kan gentænke landsbyens rolle i fremtidens Danmark.
